Prescription Drug Rehab Jupiter

Prescription Rehab for Jupiter Residents

The abuse of prescription painkillers has had a devastating effect on the country and South Florida in particular. In 2018 an average of 41 people died each day from a prescription drug overdose. Painkillers only account for a portion of the prescription drugs that are abused in the US. Anti-anxiety medications, stimulants, sedatives, and sleeping pills are all drugs that, while legal and beneficial when used as directed, can cause serious harm when misused.  Prescription drug abuse is an increasing problem affecting all age groups, including teens, with a multitude of side effects including addiction.  The process of addiction often happens slowly and many people don’t notice the moment at which they shifted from recreational abuse to intense addiction, but when addiction takes hold, it can be serious requiring medically supervised detox and intensive rehabilitation to recover.

Legacy Healing Center is a comprehensive, holistic, and accredited drug treatment with locations in Margate, Delray and Pompano Beach Florida.  Legacy is committed to creating a better life for those suffering from the devastating effects of prescription drug addiction.  We offer the kind of medical detox with clinical supervision that is often required to safely wean off prescription drugs.  Once your body has been cleansed of the toxic effects of these substances, the deeper emotional and behavioral treatment begins.  At Legacy Healing Center our mission is to address the underlying causes of addiction, to help our clients build hope, create a stable support network, and achieve long term health and healing.

Why Prescription Addiction is On the Rise

There are many reasons for the high prevalence of misuse of prescription drugs and they vary by age, gender, and other factors, but likely include ease of access.   The number of prescriptions for some of these medications has increased dramatically since the early 1990s.  In addition, the addictive properties of prescriptions are often misunderstood and the perception that drugs prescribed by a doctor are less harmful than illicit drugs also contributes to the problem.

The Most Abused Prescription Medications

There are several categories of prescription drugs that are most commonly abused.  Opioids are medications prescribed to treat acute and chronic pain and include the drugs Oxycodone (also known as Oxycontin and Percoset) and Hydrocodone (also known as Norco).  Benzodiazepines are medications used to treat anxiety and include the drugs alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium).  Sedatives such as zolpidem (Ambien) are used to treat sleep disorders and anxiety.  Stimulants such as methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) dextroamphetamine and amphetamine (Adderall, Mydayis), and dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), are commonly prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Dangers of Prescription Addiction

Prescription drugs come with a host of potential side effects, including physical dependence, addiction, and overdose.  Opioids can cause dangerously low blood pressure, the breath slowing to the point of stopping, and even coma. Opioid overdose has a significant risk of death.  Anti-anxiety medications can cause memory problems, dangerously low blood pressure, and slowed breathing. Overdose can cause coma or death. Abruptly stopping can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms including seizures.  Stimulants can cause heart problems, high blood pressure, seizures or tremors, hallucinations, aggressiveness, and paranoia.  Other potential consequences of prescription drug abuse include the use of illegal drugs, engaging in risky behaviors due to poor judgment, criminal activity, auto accidents, poor academic or work performance, and troubled relationships.
